Wilson Media & Maker Studios

Spaces for Innovation Through Critical and Creative Inquiry

Wilson Hall Maker Studio

The Wilson Hall Maker Studio is part of the Wilson Media & Maker Studios. We encourage students to inquire, invent, and imagine through the process of building, coding, designing, sculpting, molding, and playing. There are no pre-requisites for entry besides curiosity.

Please contact Jason Bennett to set up a time to take a tour!

Mission

The primary mission of the Wilson Hall Maker Studio is to support creative and critical academic projects for the University of Virginia College of Arts & Sciences. We are a new studio, and are growing; we aspire to be open and inclusive to all disciplines and projects. Whether you are faculty, staff, or student, we hope to give you access to the studio, and to listen to your feedback as we grow.

Hours & Location

Right now the studio is open Monday through Friday, 10am - 4pm. Students who have been certified for after-hours access will also be able to access the studio whenever Wilson Hall is open using their ID cards. We hope to expand our open-access hours, so if you would benefit from longer studio hours, please let us know, as it will help us advocate for increased staffing.

It is located in Wilson Hall Room 141.

Access Priority

While we hope to accomodate as many people as possible, in our current state we do have some access restrictions. Priority of access is given based on a number of criteria:

  1. First priority is given to students and faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences who will be using the studio for class projects. If you are an instructor who is interested in using the studio as an extension of your curriculum, please contact us.
  2. Second priority is given to students who will be using the studio for academic projects not connected to a particular class. If you are a student who has an academic project you wish to complete in our studio, please contact us.
  3. Tertiary priority is given to students who will be using the studio for personal projects. If you are a student who has a personal project you wish to complete in the studio, please contact us.
  4. Finally we also hope to participate in community workshops and outreach. If you are interested in using the studio for a community workshop, please contact us.

Certification and Training

You must complete the orientation before using the space. You may also be individually certified to use any particular tool in the studio. If you wish to become certified, please email Jason. Certification requirements and caveats vary from tool to tool, and are listed alongside the equipment below. The Makerbot 3D printers, for instance, may be used by individuals working alone and left on overnight. The X-Carve CNC rotuer may only be used with a buddy, and must never be left unattended. The circular saw may only be used when a shop supervisor or certified instructor is present.

Certification and access may be revoked at any time for any reason as determined by the shop manager and certified instructors.
